it has snared another top general, john allen, commander of all international troops in afghanistan. today the feds are sifting through a mountain of e-mails and messages he traded with a woman named jill kelley. a mind boggling 20,000 to 30,000 pages and agents are searching for anything inappropriate. now here is the common link. that woman, kelley, jill kelley, she's the one who received harassing e-mails supposedly from petraeus' jealous mistress, paula broadwell. petraeus admits to the affair with broadwell and has said that this woman, kelley, is a family friend. we'll take a look at each of these players in a scandal that seems to grow more bizarre by the day. first stop, pentagon and cnn's chris lawrence. so, chris, what specifically are investigators looking for in those messages? morality aside, how serious of a concern is an extramarital affair? >> it's very serious in the military. you're talking about an active duty officer, carol. and under the uniform code of military justice, you can be prosecuted for adultery. john allen is a married, fo four-star general who has be

general john allen's nomination to be supreme commander put on hold. for patreaus, panetta asked whether any kags that his affair started when he was still in active duty. >> we obviously are going to watch this closely to determine just exactly you know when that took place. but i think right now my view is, let's see what the investigation turns up and what the congress, these committees are able to determine as to what exactly took place. >> so a friend of general patreaus says the affair starts two months after he took over as cia director and ended about four months ago. four days after the patreaus scandal broke, investigators are trying gather information. what we saw agents searching paula broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, the woman involved in the affair with patreaus. fbi spokeswoman would not say what they were actually looking for but you can see they're taking stuff out. seeing the agents carrying boxes and items out of her home last night. it's clear the scandal as it grows could have far-reaching implications. i want to bring in fran townsend a member

increase for the wealthiest americans, suzanne. >> jessica, we heard boehner, john boehner, actually within the last 30 minutes or so talking about that there are ways to raise revenue and spending cuts as well in a all options are on the table. do you think the white house sees that as some sort of opening, if you will, to negotiations? >> i think both sides are hopeful there is wiggle room for negotiations. everybody knows that something has to get done because the economy will take such a serious hit if it doesn't. here is where i see the battle line right now. republicans on capitol hill tell me they are willing to raise revenue. that's a big change. they are willing to raise revenue, but without a change in the tax rates. the president has said that the highest earning americans have to pay more. congressional republicans saying no change to the tax rates. that's a big difference of opinion. they'll have to find a way to bridge that divide. beyond that, they're willing to compromise on entitlements. they're willing to find cuts, so there does seem to be room for compromise. there's als

almost 3 million votes less than john mccain did. this election, you could come up with a lot of arguments as to why mitt romney didn't win. i thought he left it all in the playing field. i thought he did as well as he could, given the circumstances. but the truth of the matter is, we couldn't come up with enough votes to win. and if you analyze this election, you can come up with 100 reasons why mitt romney lost. i'm looking towards 2016 and how can we, the gop, continue to be competitive and how can conservatives get their message across. i'm trying to tell you, to echo what patrick said. the first thing you have to do is show up. we didn't show up in the black community. we didn't show up enough in the hispanic community. we dedicated resources too little too late. and we need a long-term plan that dedicates enough resources to become competitive, knock on the door and do the things that we need to in the community. my comments about what won or lost this election are different than the comments about what's required to win the minority vote in the future. >> 2016, let's talk

between the president and john boehner. the president wants to make sure that rich people pay a little more in taxes. boehner says he's open to that but not by raising the so-called tax rate. he's opened to that by eliminating tax loopholes and exemptions and generating tax revenue by an improved economy if the gdp goes up. people will be making more money, presumably, that's the theory. there's some maneuverability. i suspect the pressure is so great that they will get some kind of a deal. it may not be a permanent deal but maybe enough to kick the ball down the road and study major tax reform over the next year. >> and so the congressional budget office came out with a report last week that seems to give the republicans some political cover here because it suggests that there will be no big harm to the economy if the wealthy 1% are taxed at a higher rate. that said, i would assume -- and you'll have to weigh in here tha, that loopholes are still highly in play. >> you have to add up what all of the math shows and if you -- forget about the middle class. for wealthy people you say you

taxing problem. we heard from speaker john boehner. he said that revenue is on the table. the issue here is that president obama has said he wants to increase tax rates on wealthy americans. the speaker and house republicans are still not on board with increasing tax rates, although perhaps closing some loopholes to raise some revenue, and even though there's a lot of kind of kumbaya going on here, suzanne, there's still a lot of tough work that needs to be done. they're still maybe punting on some of the important issues like tax reform and entitlement reform, but they'll be dealing with the fiscal cliff here in the near term. >> it's probably difficult to tell, but we see these pictures, and it's very common, right? you get about 30 seconds to see them all in a room together. they're patting each other on the back, smiling, and shaking hands, that kind of thick. do we have any sense of whether or not there were any different kind of tone or language when they were meeting behind closed doors that gives us a sense that maybe this is real? >> you know, i think, oh, to be a fly on the wal
